Google has announced a new round of voluntary separation agreements (buyouts) available to U.S.-based employees across several key divisions—Search, advertising, research, core engineering, marketing, and communications—underscoring a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence and long-term efficiency.
These “Voluntary Exit Programs” (VEPs) include generous severance—at least 14 weeks' pay—aimed at offering an “exit path” for those feeling misaligned or uninspired by the company’s evolving direction.
Simultaneously, Google is implementing stricter hybrid work mandates. Remote employees living within 50 miles of a U.S. office are now expected to work on-site at least three days per week. This reflects the company’s belief that in-person collaboration is critical to accelerating innovation in areas like Search and AI.
These moves continue Google’s cost-control initiatives following major layoffs—such as the 12,000 jobs cut in 2023—and earlier buyouts in divisions like Platforms, Pixel, and Android. They support a broader shift of resources into AI-related projects, including the expansion of Gemini, AI Mode in Search, and other next-generation initiatives. Capital expenditure is expected to surge to around $75 billion in 2025
