On May 17, 2025, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced a major natural gas discovery in the Black Sea, estimated at 75 billion cubic meters and valued at approximately $30 billion. Located at the Göktepe-3 well, about 165 kilometers offshore, this reserve is expected to supply Turkey's residential gas needs for approximately 3.5 years.
The discovery was made using the Abdülhamid Han, Turkey's advanced seventh-generation drilling ship, which began operations at the site on March 27. This find adds to Turkey's growing energy portfolio, including the Sakarya Gas Field, which currently produces around 9.5 million cubic meters of gas daily.
Turkey's reliance on energy imports, accounting for over 90% of its consumption, has been a longstanding economic challenge. This new discovery aligns with the nation's strategic goal of achieving energy independence and reducing its import bill.
